The Marco lab aims to conduct innovative and transformative research to positively impact the world and to prepare the next generation of scientists and scholars to tackle pressing issues in human and animal health and food production.
We strive to provide deep insights into how dietary and intestinal microbes affect health and food quality. To reach these goals, we apply holistic microbiome approaches as well as reductive mechanistic research. We specialize in the ecology, genetics, and metabolism of lactic acid bacteria because of their importance as probiotics and members of animal and human microbiomes and because they are integral to making fermented foods and beverages.
We endeavor to foster an inclusive and supportive laboratory culture that encourages collaboration of all backgrounds and experiences. We believe that diverse work teams generate the most innovative ideas. For this approach to succeed, our intent is to be respectful of different intellectual ideas and personal viewpoints. We affirm that mentorship along with physical and mental wellness are an important part of scientific training, both as a mentor and a mentee. To achieve individual goals and collective accomplishments, we work together to develop strong communities that support each other personally and professionally.
